正如馆长地一句话,“it’s very easy to destroy the things thatare unknown.”,若都不曾注意到地存在,又怎会意识到它地悄然消逝呢?
“to protect the environment, the first thing we have to do is todiscover the amazing variety of wild animals. each generation must pass it on,this isn’t a temporary project.”
let the birds soarin the “middle-earth”
as the shanghai international environmentalconservation week has come again, all of the students in the internationaldepartment of our school has come to the shanghai museum of natural history onoctober 28th. we attended a lecture given by dale bailey, the curator of thenew zealand national museum. the curator’s lecture involved the endangeredspecies, the environmental pollution, the biodiversity, the ecologicalcivilization and many other sections, and it aimed to promote and spread theconcept of “pursuing harmonious coexistence between human and nature”. althoughmost of the students are not familiar with the english lectures, we have learntmore or less through the simultaneous interpretation. through this lecture, wehave had deeper understanding of ecological system and the awareness ofenvironmental protection.
as we all know, new zealand is separated fromthe mainland. the isolated geographical feature makes it has many unique plantsand animals. there are various creatures in this island nation which dubbedthis country “the paradise of the world”. dale bailey began his speech withintroducing the exotic birds in new zealand, for example, the “kiwi” is knownas the symbol of the new zealand; “kakapo” is the only kind of parrot thatcouldn’t fly; “godwit” could fly for long distance without rest... thesevarious birds with different characteristics appealed to all of the audiences.what actually impressed me was the current situation of godwit. this kind ofbird has now becoming one kind of endangered species and facing the probabilityof extinction.
i also remembered the example the curator hasmentioned-- a story about a kind of petrel that once existed around 1895. laterin 2003, more than a hundred years later, the same kind of petrel was foundonce again in a small island and there were more than one thousand of them. weshould make sure we know all kinds of species around us and try to provide themsuitable environment. we’d better remember them, feel them, appreciate them andrecord them. as dale bailey said, it’s very easy to destroy the thingsthat are unknown.” if you have not even noticed the existence of these species, how will it be possible for us to realize that they have wore off?
after that, the curator showed us somepictures to introduce the marine organisms in new zealand to us, such as thegiant octopus, to the seahorses, and to the different kinds of fishes. thesepictures illustrated us the diversity of marine life. due to the diversity ofmarine life, the classification and recording become crucial.
in order to protect the beauty of the world, the governments will carry their weight or and work together. some small andquiet acts which seem unimportant are actually the powerful force for the wholebusiness. every little deed can make a big difference. when facing theprotection of endangered animals and environment, there is no national boundarybetween countries. now the new zealand government is doing all that they can doto protect these birds. they killed the animals that may threaten the birdslike rats or other mammals and built a conservation area to protect manyendangered birds effectively. at the same time, the new zealand governmentannounced that they are planning to remove all the mammals out of theconservation area by 2050. the new zealand government and the chinesegovernment is now working together to protect these endangered animals.
the last part of the lecture is q&a.katherine zuo from grade 9 and biology-teacher mr. wang asked some questionsand had specific explanations from dale bailey. after the lecture, he wassurrounded by the passionate students who haven’t had the chance to askquestions. this situation made the curator felt flattered.
we have only one earth. the residents, humanbeings live here generation by generation. the responsibility of protecting theenvironment is not only for scientists, environmentalists or governments, butfor each generation, each person.
